What is the difference between flat die cutting and round die cutting?

2026 03/27

Many people only know that the names of two processes are different, but they do not know the difference in actual cutting methods. Let's break them down in layman's terms and understand them at a glance. We don't need to look at complex equipment diagrams, we can distinguish them based on descriptions.
Flat blade die-cutting: upper and lower pressure cutting, suitable for "fine and flexible, small batch"

Flat blade die-cutting, in other words, is "cutting by pressing up and down", which is a bit similar to using scissors to cut things normally, except that the scissors have been replaced with customized flat blade molds. The mold is flat and fixed on the die-cutting machine. The material is placed under the mold and cut into the desired shape at once by pressing up and down.

Its operation is very simple, and it is also convenient to customize molds. Whether it is simple rectangles, circles, complex shapes, or multiple cuts, they can be precisely customized. Moreover, the material is stationary during cutting, and the pressure is uniform, which can better control the accuracy and is suitable for products with high requirements for cutting flatness and dimensional accuracy.

Gaoqi provides flat blade die-cutting services and customizes molds accurately based on customer product drawings. Whether it's thin films like paper or thicker foam or stickers, they can be cut accurately with smooth and burr free cuts and minimal dimensional deviations to meet various precision die-cutting needs.

Round knife die-cutting: Roller rolling, suitable for "large batch, continuous cutting"

Round knife die-cutting is completely different from flat knife pressing. It is a "roller rolling cutting", similar to how we usually use a rolling pin to roll dough. The mold is circular and fixed on the roller, and the material passes between the two rollers. The roller rotates at high speed, feeding and cutting at the same time, achieving continuous die-cutting.

The core advantage of this cutting method is "fast", no need to pause, as long as the materials are sufficient, it can be continuously produced, suitable for large-scale and standardized die-cutting needs. And it can achieve "multiple processes in one go", such as cutting, laminating, and discharging at the same time, eliminating subsequent rework steps and greatly improving efficiency.

Gaoqi's round knife die-cutting equipment is made of high-precision drum molds, which can accurately control the cutting force and speed. Even in large-scale continuous production, it can ensure that the size and cut of each product are consistent without deviation, while balancing efficiency and quality.
